POST LABOR DAY FLOODING EVENT IN SANDY HARBOR
Weather conditions placed Llano County and surrounding areas on a Severe Weather Alertfrom 8pm to 12 midnight, Tuesday September 3rd, following a very busy family holiday weekend. By midnight Tuesday, flood water from Walnut Creek submerged Sandy Harbor’s “Low Water Crossing” by 4.5 feet. To assure safety, barricades were placed by SHVFD to close off passage on the “Low Water Crossing”.
Poorly secured boats, lake recreational property and yard furnishings washed downstream from Walnut Creek properties overnight. By Wednesday at noon, SHVFD and helping hands from community members secured most items washed away by high water and the process of identifying and notifying owners began. Fortunately, no structural damage or personal injuries occurred.
IMPORTANT ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE
1) Stay informed about current Sandy Harbor weather conditions: LCRA – https://hydromet.lcra.org monitors area conditions by automated river and weather gauges conditions on Lake LBJ and its tributaries including Sandy Creek, Walnut Creek and Sandy Harbor. Their “Hydromet” map shows the current water flow of Sandy Creek @ Hwy 71. There is an LCRA gauge at Park C which shows rainfall amounts and current water levels at Sandy Harbor. Their website has a wealth of information regarding current and historical weather/water conditions of the complete watershed. In addition, national and statewide websites post weather conditions by the day and hour, weather radar details the path, timeline and intensity of storm activity. Stay informed!
2) Secure all personal property easily affected by high winds, damaging hail, heavy rains or flood waters. Waterfront property owners especially need to ensure yard furniture and recreational items are securely stored and not subject to high wind or high water.
3) Emergency Contact Information should be updated and filed with the Sandy Harbor POA. Update current property owners name, Sandy Harbor address, cell phone, and email address. Also include an alternate contact to be used in case of any emergency affecting your property or visitors. Please submit current contact information by email to sandyharborassociation@gmail.com .
4) Be ALERT/Be SAFE –Changes in submerged sediment deposits and/or floating and submerged debris are common after any major weather event. LCRA warns that personal injury or damage to lake recreational property can occur anywhere on Lake LBJ with these weather-related changes.
In case of any EMERGENCY always call 9-1-1.
